Marie Duggan discusses San Francisco Bay Area Borderlands Between Russian and Spanish Empires

Marie Christine Duggan has taught economics at Keene State College in New Hampshire for 20 years, after receiving a PhD in economics from the New School for Social Research in 2000. She speaks Spanish and uses archives of business materials in Mexico, Spain and Santa Barbara to explore how Hispanic commercial actors in Mexico, Spain, Lima and Manila influenced California’s development. She is publishing in 2021 in the Journal of Evolutionary Business Studies in Barcelona “From Bourbon Reform to Open Markets in California, 1801 to 1821.”  She published in 2016 in the Pacific Historical Review, “With and Without and Empire: Financing for California Missions Before and After 1810.”
